Educate The Young and Save The Planet
Educational establishments are jumping on the bandwagon for the fight to maintain our planets resources. This not only includes replacing lightbulbs to more environmentally friendly ones and sprinkler systems, but also providing lectures to the public and the student body on why such measures must be taken and the ultimate effect of the crisis we face to conserve our resources.
Students are the prime target at universities across the nation to support these measures and to learn about the true extent of the issue.
In an era where global warming and the Greenhouse Effect pops up in an elementary school syllabus as often as the Civil War, the “customers” of these colleges are advocating every green movement imaginable, from recycling to water conservation to flipping the public restroom’s light switch. It’s a race for the future and no waste is left behind.

Here are some of the ways that colleges can and are going green:
- Reduce the use of water in campus maintenance and sprinkling systems
- Make recycling bins easialy accesable to students across a campus
- By converting to technological equipment that uses minimal electricity
- Having students and teachers turn lights off when they have finished with the room
- Keeping lights off during peak sunrise hours in lieu of windows
- Providing interesting presentations to the student body and public on the effects of climate change on our everyday lives, from infectious disease to “greenwashing”
But we all know this is just the beginning. An interesting read on how colleges address the green movement issue, you should check out the progress the oldest college in Florida, Saint Leo University, has made and continues to plan for during 2010.
Does your school or university advocate environmentally friendly procedures? I’d love to hear about them…..
